The outside of ole trunks like the one you describe wer usually varnished. You can repair the cloth by varnishing it down to the wood and then working with any discoloration to match the surrounding area and varnishing over the color that you add. Be aware that varnish will usually darken the color that it is put over so you need to make a test "board" to see what it will do.
