Should I restore or not?

Hi! I have an old trunk (has a steamer stamp from 1895)that is not in great shape (of course, it's old!). I've been told not to restore it because it will loose it's value but on the other hand, I've seen them beautifully restored, with new material inside and poly-urethaned wood outside. What should I do? Help me decide, please!
