  Here is part of the
Getty Research Institute
This is one of the best resources on the Internet

AATA Online is a comprehensive database of 100,000 abstracts of literature related to the preservation and conservation of material cultural heritage.
http://aata.getty.edu/NPS/

In keeping with its educational mission, the Getty provides access to a range of online research tools relating to the visual arts, architecture, and related fields of study.

The Research Library Catalog provides access to records on monographs, serials, and auction catalogs as well as rare books, archival materials, and other items in the Research Library's collections. A selection of Internet and CD-Rom resources is available to on-site researchers through the Collections Integrated Catalog (CIC).

The Research Library's Special Collections Finding Aids contain detailed descriptions of some of the collections of archival documents, rare photographs, prints, architectural drawings, and other materials in Special Collections; the Research Library adds to this repository of online archival finding aids on an ongoing basis.

The Research Library's Photo Study Collection database provides access to more than 300,000 records representing approximately half of the 2 million items in this collection. Collection-level descriptions of all of the collections in the Photo Study Collection are available in the Research Library catalog. Recently the Research Library has begun adding digital images to selected Photo Study Collection database records.

Getty Research Institute Digital Resources include Web sites that focus on a particular artist, subject, collection, or group of collections represented in the Research Library; they include images, contextual and historical information, and links to related resources.

The Research Library's Provenance Index databases provide online access to information on the history of art collecting (primarily European paintings from the 16th through the 19th centuries) gathered from sales and auction catalogs, archival documents, and museum files.

The Getty Research Institute's Vocabulary Databases (the Art & Architecture Thesaurus®, the Union List of Artist Names®, and the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names™) contain terminology and other information about the visual arts, architecture, artists, and geographic places.

The Getty vocabulary databases are the Art & Architecture Thesaurus® (AAT), the Union List of Artist Names® (ULAN), and the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names™ (TGN). They comprise terminology important for the description of art, architecture, and material culture. They are built and maintained by the Getty Vocabulary Program. The Getty vocabularies are compiled resources that grow through contributions from various Getty projects and external institutions. The vocabularies may be accessed in online "browsers" by clicking on the links below. To learn about licensing the vocabularies, read about "Licensing and Sample Data" below. The AAT, ULAN, and TGN are copyrighted by the The J. Paul Getty Trust. All rights reserved.

Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT) image
The Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT)
The AAT is a structured vocabulary of around 125,000 terms, scope notes, and other information for describing fine art, architecture, decorative arts, archival materials, and material culture.

Union List of Artist Names (ULAN) image
The Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)
The ULAN is a structured vocabulary containing around 220,000 names and biographical information about artists and architects, including a wealth of variant names, pseudonyms, and language variants.

Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN) image
The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN)
The TGN is a structured vocabulary of around 1,000,000 geographic names, including vernacular and historical names, coordinates, and place types, and focusing on places important for the study of art and architecture.

General Information
Here you will find general information about the  purpose and applications of the Getty vocabularies. You can also view the Introduction to Vocabularies primer.

Licensing and Sample Data
Here you will find links to user's manuals and sample data. The Getty vocabularies are made available via the Web "browsers" (AAT, ULAN, and TGN) to support limited research and cataloging efforts. Companies and institutions interested in regular or extensive use of the vocabularies should explore licensing options.

Frequently asked Questions
Here you will find answers to the most common questions about the vocabularies.
