Julia,

Patination is the colour that builds up on the wood over long periods of time, you also get it on Bronze items, and is the accumilation of years and years of old dirt, polish and even sweat on an object. Its impossible to fake the patination on wood that's taken years to form and I have seen furniture made worthless by the removal of it.

Many people look for a good patina on wooden objects, especially old ones.

I would steer well clear of the cleaner as from what you have already described you could ruin the piece. If in doubt take it to an auction house or Restorer maybe and seek proper advise before you do anything.

Grime should wash off gently with warm lightly soapy water, that shouldn't effect the patina.
