Painted plaster picture frames

I have an old plaster painted gold oval picture frame of a family member done in 1917. It is very ornate and fagile and is missing some gold paint in places. While attempting to clean it I discovered the plaster and actually washed away some of it. With what should I paint it and make it look better?
