Hi Steve, shellac would be reddish to treacle brown in colour, quite hard but brittle. You can try some stuff called Dichloromethane, it is the active ingredient in Nitromors (R) with Ethyl Alcohol or acetone. You would apply these via cotton wool poultices or with CMC gel. If you have a steam machine (the most wonderful piece of equipment to have) start with the steam cleaning.The pressure is quite high (5 bars)and it could lift off the shellac. Good luck, Manuela
