camel back trunk

I am trying to restore a camel back trunk and need help. The trunk has been spray painted. I have removed the paint from the wooden areas. There is metal (tin, aluminum not sure what) that is embossed with flowers I can not seem to get it to the original silver every thing that I try to use on it causes it to turn brown. Any ideas of how to get it back to the original.
