Beginner needs advice

Well hello there! I just recently began my exploration into the world of furniture restoration and I am looking for a few tips that may seem trivial. I just began my first piece today by first stripping the lacquer with a brand called Zip-Strip. I used a brush to apply it and then waited 10 minutes and removed the goo with a puddy knife. The goo, however, did not completely remove the finish and I was left some of it in blotches around the edges... is this sufficient or should I get ALL the finish off even in the smallest of corners? Also, should I be using sandpapeer or steel wool after I strip it. I appreciate the help, thanks.
