ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

I am restoring two antique chairs, which I believe are from the federalist period, or pre-Victorian. One is a rocker, and the other is a straight legged chair, on old casters. Both chairs have heavy checking. Some of the wood finish that shows is reddish. I am using a product recommended by an antique shop (Kramers Best Antique Improver), but it doesn't seem to be doing anything about the checking. My question is whether I should use a 0000 steel wool, or not even worry about the checking.
Thank you
