If the paintings have any value, they should be cleaned professionally. If you do want to do it your self, start mineral spirits and dab lighly with a moistend pad. If you need more strength, add in a little lacquer thinner and repeat the process. Dab lightly and go slowly, letting the painting dry regularly so that you don't damage the image. "

I will check with a friend who is an Art Cosevator to find a better answer if one exists, James ;)
