Plaster molding on vanity

Hello. I just bought an old solid maple vanity - very ornate - original finish was paint - I guess for the French Provincial look. Anyway, someone did a lousy job of re-painting it - and the new paint is flaking off like crazy. I would like to strip it, but I have a funny feeling the ornate plaster moldings under the paint will dribble away with the stripper. Am I right? Is there a way to remove the bad paint job without damaging the original paint OR the molding? Thanks, Polly
