ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Gold Leaf Oxidation

Gentlemen, I am attempting restoration of an old ornate libraby table for the Cambria Historical Society. The table may have some provenance with Hearst Castle, but this is not proven. The table appears to be 80 - 100 years old. The table has what looks to be gold leaf applied to most leg surfaces, which are carved Icanthus leaves. This gold leaf is incredibly tarnished to a dark greenish shade. How does one clean the tarnish off the gold without damage?

Thanks, Roger
