In Response To: Painted French Dressers (Malcolm Cromarty)

If they are really that old then I wouldn't do too much to the finish at all...do the physical repairs, inject a woodworm poison to make sure they are dead...clean the finish carefully without disturbing the natural patina and carefully paste wax.....they should show all that wear and tear and patina..that's all I would do as the condition of them matters as far as value...as soon as you start messing with replacing painted details, or repainting anywhere, you will affect the value...I would have them appraised by a professional to see what they are and what they're worth......original condition matters on almost anything 18th century...
