Hi Pam..I would choose an oil finish product but Watco or a Danish oil will not stand up as well as WaterLox...check out the above link...you may not be able to find it at home depot, but I believe you can order it and have it shipped from several places, one being www.woodworker.com.....this type of oil finish will not chip, flake, or scratch like a film finish such as shellac, varnishes, or polyurethanes, and can be maintained easily by cleaning the surface and recoating. Outdoor products typically have mildewcides and other toxic preservative additives that you wouldn't want in your house.....best of luck
