I believe you are referring to the paint on the interior surfaces of the ice box? I have tried to leave that paint alone is at all possible, since the use of these items will not include food again. If there is lead paint in there then I think that as a health hazard you may want to get that out, carefully, and dispose of properly. There are occasions when secure lead paint is coated with shellac or the like to reduce flaking of the hazardous material. If you are referring to exterior paint, that would be rare to see. I would inspect very closely to note if it is original, but I think that is not your situation.
