How to retouch gilt wood furniture?

Hi. I recently bought antique gilt wood chairs for the first time and would like to learn how to retouch the gilt part. It looks like the gilt part was painted, but could be partially gold leaf?? I cannot even tell. It has some black sandish part and red paint-like part here and there. Some tipped part has a layer of white plaster between the gold and the wood. The entire gold layer looks very thin. Would someone be able to help me? Hiroko
