In Response To: Bartley kits (Martha)

I have, over the course of more than a few years, completed several kits from the folk at Bartley. I started with a wall cabinet, then a couple of stands (ie muffin, fern, etc), a trestle table, sideboard, two pembroke lamp tables, a stretcher coffee table, hanging cupboard, four drawer chest, and a four poster bed. I have found their kits to be uniformally high in wood quality, assembly tolerances, instructions, and especially in the written 'advice' on how to end up with a well done product. Their finishing tips, from their own experts are well presented and straight forward. You may also call them directly if a problem arises or questions are posed that need clarification. I have assembled and finished quality wood reproductions from a number of sources, and would have to say that Bartley is probably at or near the top in quality. Several years ago, while moving from coast to coast, our moving company played 'let's crush the furniture' with our cocktail table. They destroyed the frame around the top of it and when I called Bartley to see if I could acquire a replacement piece, in cherry, they said they would have to check to see if that piece was currently available. They took down the pertinent information and the next thing I knew, the piece arrived by UPS, with no bill or invoice. I contacted Bartley to see how much I owed them and they said simply that there would be no charge. And they thanked me for the business! That's customer service at the highest level. They earned my appreciation and endorsement!
