I would use steam to swell the wood to it's previous shape. A clothes iron and damp cloth will work, but I find that a plastic hose fixed to a cappuccino machine works better, or a curtain steamer. The idea is to avoid getting the wood too hot from the iron and thus burning the wood grain, it may take a lot of steam, but it will get better and may be possible to remove altogether.
