Remove Tar from Wood Furniture

I have recently inherited a five-drawer tall chest that was my grandmother's. I believe it dates from the very late 19th or early 20th century. It is solid maple, stained mahogany, with dovetailed joints. Unfortunately, what I believe to be roofing tar from the deteroriated roof of the old family homestead has dripped down the front of the drawers. How do I remove it? I am cleaning up (not refinishing) a number of such pieces, though this is the only one with tar on it, and I am fearful of driving tar residue further into the wood than it already may be. How can I proceed without making the problem worse?

Help! and many thanks.
