There is no quick and easy way to wash away the finish on brass, short of filling a tank with paint stripper, not cheep. Try a paste stripper, for paint, since the finish on brass is hardy stuff. Let it set for as lons as you can short of drying, about 30 minutes would be nice. Slide off all the stripper with a squege or spatula, into a waste pail of kitty litter, dispose properly. Then hose off the remainder, over a sewer drain, and with eye and skin protection in place all the while. Now you may polish and refinish with a brass lacquer.
