You will retain a greater value in collectable furniture if you can restore the finish as opposed to stripping and refinishing the same piece. If a finish is no longer in good restorable condition then it's alright to refinish, and original "look" is then best for value retention. If a piece is highly valued and was produced by historical collectors then the finish should be left alone and should be worked on only by qualified restorers and an appraiser has given you a direction to proceed in. Your piece is unique, and it isn't up there with the great ones yet, but there is always the possibility, in the future.
