It's probably sap from the knots which were the sap veins ... Turpentine will probably dissolve the sap, because it has turpenes in it that are made from coniferous trees..(pines) it might take some rubbing though as when this sap gets REALLY old it becomes Amber.....meaning fossilized. Depending on the finish, you might dull the area..the chances are pretty good that it won't happen anymore so after you clean the area and let it dry, a coat of paste wax is probably all you'll need.
