In Response To: Damaged Varnish (Bob Mitchell)

Bob, It is probably not varnish but rather lacquer or shellac. Lacquer is more likely. Test a small area that is out of the way. Wipe a little lacquer thinner on to see if the finish comes off (fingernail polish remover will do this). If it comes off it is lacquer. Similarly, alchohol will remove shellac. Try cleaning the top with naptha to remove old oils etc, then lightly sand the area with fine sandpaper......400 to 600 grit. Then pad on some finish over the affected area. Either lacquer or shellac depending on your finish. Put on several coats to build up the finish. When it dries lightly sand again to level the surface and buff with 0000 steel wool. This is the only fix short of refinishing it.
