roger plan is good, but I would reccommend a good cleaning withing murphy's soap and water or just plain soap and water. wash and dry small areas at a time not leaving the solution standing on the piece, this will remove all grime with out removing anything else. If you decide to go futher you can follow rogers plan or you can use briwax and apply it with the 4/0 steel wool and polish the piece out. If you decide you want to do this I would reccommend that you try to get the piece glued up and as structually sound as possible before starting any real polishing work.
