I'm an old Boy Scout leader so I am familiar with what you have. Don't try to fill the cracks. Thay happen from natural shrinkage of the wood and filling them might cause more problems. I have several hiking staffs similar to that. Just smooth it out as best you can with sandpaper or steel wool and put a few coats of Tung oil on it. Leave it natural.......it isn't a fine piece of furniture!
