In Response To: finish on a Victorian fainting couch (Ani DiFazio)

You could apply varnish but without knowing what is on it now that's kind of iffy. I would go with the wax stick and wax route after you clean it. The best thing I have found for cleaning is by Minwax, called Wood Cleaner. Yes........Minwax Wood Cleaner. It comes in a pump spray and around here I have only found it at Sears Hardware. Follow with the wax stick for scratches and a good coat of wax.
