I can always tell if a piece has been refinshed since the signs are all over the onder side. Stripper runs, sanding scratches from electric sanders, sloppy staining that does not appear to be done by a factory or craftsman, spray finishes that seem to be newer in nature, or sloppy brush marks from foam pads, and wood filler or new glue in the joints. Go to an antique store and see how the old items finish's appears after 100 years, and compare that to your piece, the answer should be obvious.
