You could also try some "Goof Off" remover..this is a commercially available solvent for removing a lot of things like adhesives from stickers, black scuff marks etc. It works wonders and is usually available everywhere....just test in an inconspicuos spot first..and just use a rag of some t-shirt or polo shirt material, rubbing briskly and then drying with some clean rag...steel wool will change the sheen (or worse) in an area you rub so exercise caution...
