Restoring Bentwood Chairs

I found three interesting Thonet bentwood armchairs in a dumpster, and I'd like to try to restore them. They appear to have been painted, and my attempt to clean them (using vinegar, paint thinner & linseed oil)has been only partially sussessful. Should I just strip the paint off of them and refininsh them? They also have damage and splitting of the wood where it comes together, but the wood is not broken. Can I restore the damaged wood and make it more pliable, so the separation can be fixed? I'm new to this and need all the help I can get!
