Safe use of most store bought strippers should keep the veneer intact, as long as you avoid any water rinse, water base strippers are not the best for this either. You could use denatured alcohol and then raise the writing dents with a steam iron set on linen and a damp cotton cloth. It may take a bit, but the steam dosen't go very deep so that isn't a great danger. Trying to sand them out is the real risk, only very fine paper should be used for sanding veneer, say, 180 grit.
