ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Wood desktop restoration

I recently acquired a cherry desk with birch inlaid veneers. Over the 50 or so years of incorrect usage, the desk has indentations of writing instruments that I would like to get rid of. If I strip, I believe I'll ruin the veneered designs(starburst) in the wood. Any way of removing indentations without ruining the integrity of the desk top.

Thank you. I am a 100% novice at this so you're detailed assistance is much appreciated.
