Drawer runner repair

Hello, I have an old pine 1880's dresser which needs help. Over the years, the drawers have worn out deep tracks into the runners underneath them, making the drawers hard to open, plus spreading wood dust on the clothers in the drawer underneath. I suspect a professional would totally replace the runners, or flip them over -- I don't have the skill/tools to do this. Would it be OK to fill in the runners with some sort of wood filler, smooth it out, and wax it so the drawers open and shut better? What If yes, what type of wood filler would be best? Any help/advice would be appreciated, Lachlan
