I suspect that, if you look closely, you may find that the wood was not cut off, but has seperated where the glue held various parts together to make the leg from small stock. Moisture mat have been the culprit, and the other leg may not be far behind. A carving club may find you a hobby/artist carver, who may be willing to work less expensivly, as I would have to charge about $100.00, site unseen. I like the idea of fixing the leg as will you when you have the luxury of enjoying the work without always knowing you cut a few corners, litteraly.
