Recently I've started using Minwax wood cleaner. The advertising on the bottle isn't the usual hype - it really works! Try it on an out of the way place first though. I've also used TSP with a lot of success, but it is pretty strong stuff so go easy and again try it in an out of the way spot. Your ring sounds like a wet glass was set on it. Shellac and old lacquer were famous for the white rings. If it is faint try smearing some Vasoline on it and leaving it for a day or two. Quite often that works and will do no harm in any case.
