It sounds like one of the cleaners was too harsh and you have removed some of the finish. You may want to request the services of a restorer, they should be able to repair the damage without having to refinish the piece. If you want to try this your self, then you need to learn alot about finishing and repairing same. Give me some idea of your intentions and we can go into it further.
