The alternative that I use is tinted lacquer, since I am going to lacquer the piece to mantain a shine anyway. Why not shoot a little transparent tinted coating on the polished metal first? A cherry fruitwood or light walnut toner can bake an undetectable improvement on bare spots, and for lighter brass, a light dusting of golden oak after polishing will be a sharp bright brass. Jewelers rouge and a high speed buffing wheel will make for better results. Once you have that mirror like shine the rest is all color, at least when you have no other choices.
