In Response To: gilt incising (JIM)

Hey Jim...are you speaking of black lacquered stuff here?...it would definately be hard to apply gold leaf sizing and apply the leaf that accurately...painting is more accurate and often it's one of the first steps..then the surrounding surface can be lightly sanded rendering sharp lines where incised..then the finish applied next. with a black lac finish you can apply the lacquer then paint the incised lines as carefully as possible...then wet sand the surrounding area eliminating any gold outside the lines, and then clearcoat blending it all together with the final sheen.
