Hi Roger, it kind of depends what the original finishing was on the metal. I also would be hesitant to sand the wood unless absolutely necessary. I'm sure this trunk has a nice worn patinated surface given it's age, and there are many ways to clean and restore the wood without taking sandpaper to it...again it really depends on the final look you're after....if you would like to send a picture or two to any one of us, we'd be glad to help...
