ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Old student desk

I have what looks to be a very old double student desk. The top is about 1 1/4" thick and what appears to be oak. The legs are some kind of bronze looking metal. While being stored, the finish was rubbed off of much of the desk top so it's this mixture of finished and not so much finish.

I'm such a novice at this and feel a bit over my head when I read some of the posts. How do I bring this lovely old piece back to its finer days? The grain of the wood is beautiful, and even the occasional scratches made by students over the years just add to its character.

I'd like to do this myself.
