Bronze look cupboard fittings

I have an oldish cupboard which has steel furniture. The steel has been coated with a mottled bronze look. I think it is called antique bronze. The steel is rusted and I can remove the rust with a simple electrolytic method using washing soda (sodium carbonate) but this leaves bare steel patches. I would like to restore the bronzed look and need some advise on how to do it. I can strip the old bronzing off electrolytically if necessary and have the equipment to do basic electroplating. The previous finish appears to be an electolytic or chemical process as the bronze is bonded to the steel.
