ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Upholstering an antique chair

I have an antique chair, solid cherry, with the original wooden casters on it and the joints are still in great shape. The seat on the other hand is falling apart. I have pulled the rotten material off and the straw out. The springs are attached with twine and are still in great shape. Has anyone fixed a seat like this before? What should be used in place of the straw which was in the original one? It was my great grandmother's which she purchased in Charleston, SC in the 1880's and would love to get it back to it's original condition. Any ideas?
