Cleaning copper leaf: I need help!

I have a copper-leafed vaulted ceiling, 20x20 feet. There were some hands marks on the copper and I tried simple solutions (water, vinegar, etc) to clean the marks off. Finally, in desperation I used Tarn-X. Big mistake. It cleaned the marks, but eventually left black spots. I'd like to use some sort of cleaning solution that will even out the overall ceiling, then let the copper mellow out a bit, so it's not so shiny, then seal it. Any suggestions for a cleaning solution that is easy to obtain and easy to apply? Thank you very much.
