finishing a poplar bedframe

I have recently finished making a bedframe of poplar. I would like to stain it to a dark coffee colour with s satin finish. I tried tung oil with a dye and found it somewhat muddy. Any recommendations? Should I prep the wood first? Should I simply apply polyurethane to get the satin finish? I do not like the yellowing effect it gives the finish?
