split oak table

I recently bought an oak table where the tabletop has spit where the pieces were joined (glued together). We thought we could take the top apart and reqlue but the glue did not hold because there was too much warp or gap in the seam. We are considering planing the edge and reglueing. We only paid a couple hundred for the table and plan on using for a kitchen table. Is there something else we should be doing instead? Is there a special glue we should use? cate
