childs wicker rocking chair

I have a childs antique rocking chair of great sentimental value that belonged to my mother and possibly my grandmother as well. When I was a child (at least 35 years ago) my father painted it with heavy white and red paint which is now chipping in many areas- on the wicker and wood rockers. I would like to strip it to a natural finish for my son but have no clue how to do it properly and have had trouble finding info. Is this possible to do myself or better left to a professional?

Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing from someone> Amelia
