replace desktop veneer

I have a vintage 1954 walnut veneer office desk mfg. by Jasper Office Furniture Co. It is a fairly utilitarian double pedestal design with a 30x60 top. I suppose the top was damaged at some point as someone replaced the top with a simulated walnut laminate. I would like some advice on replacing this - what would be the correct kind of top for a desk of this period. Should I simply replace the top with a quality walnut veneer? Or, would some other material be more appropriate? Where's a good place to buy veneer of this size. Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
