Refinishing a dining room table

I am re-doing an old dining room table. I am at point where I have stripped the table, restained, put three coats of tung oil and one coat of paste wax on it. Looks great and we used it for the first time last night. I used placemats on the table but from the heat of the bowl it left rings on the table. What can I do to stop this from happening again? Did I do something wrong or forget to do something to prevent this? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
