In Response To: a more durable finish for a dining table (Marianne)

The old coating cannot support itself or the application of a new "poly" coat. It's chemistry has detoriated and weakened. Adding poly or wax on top of the old coating would be much like glass on top of marshmellows, one cannot support the other. For daily use I submit that the old coating be removed and a new material be applied. Whether you do this yourself or seek the services of a local refinisher is your call. Or maybe a tablecloth?
