The wood is most likely stained and a wax will not protect this wood as a table top that gets normal use. You may be able to clear up the rings, if white in color, with a lacquer retarder. A good cleaning with paint thinner will allow you to recoat with a spray coat of Deft, which will often remove the water rings as well. If striping seems to be the only alternative, you have nothing to loose.
