This could be a maple or poplar wood, but there can be some bennefit from an oil stain where this has happened. The surface will return to a good color when sanded a bit and stained with a Danish Oil Stain. Thin the first coat with some mineral spirits, say by 25% in the first coat. Wipe off all stain from the surface after soaking in for 20 minutes and repeat a day later, wiping well again and dispose of the oily rags in a water bucket. After a 48 hour drying period choose a good clear finish, shellac is a fair coating for antiques, coat and when dry sand lightly with 320 grit open coat sand paper and repeat for at least 3 coats. Buff the last coat with 0000 steel wool and wax to a satin sheen with a soft cotton cloth.
